Similarities and Differences

Similarities and Differences

Authors Note: This is an assigned piece for comparing and contrasting. I decided to compare the main characters from two books, Adam Cooper from April Morning by Howard Fast and Jack Ryan Jr. from the novel Dead or Alive  by Tom Clancy.

Differences make people who they are. Nobody is the same but similarities are often shared between people.  Jack Ryan Jr. from the novel Dead or Alive and Adam Cooper from April Morning have many similarities and differences.

One thing these two characters have in common is that many of their decisions are influenced by their fathers.  They both still somewhat live under the command of their fathers.  Jack and Adam (the main characters) do not have complete control over their lives.  For example, when war arose in Lexington it was not Adam’s decision to contribute by enlisting in the military, it was his father who made the final decision.  While Jack keeps his job in the secret services hidden from his father because he is afraid that his dad will force him to quit.  Both characters’ fathers still influence the decisions that they make.
Another similarity these two characters share is the constant effort to get approval and respect from their dads, both wish to be treated like men.  Jack goes into government related business hoping to impress his father with his success, while Adam tries to achieve this by going to war to fight alongside the other men in Lexington.  A constant seeking for approval is another thing these two characters have in common.
While both characters are seeking approval from their fathers, they are approaching it in different ways.   Adam goes straight to his father to earn his respect and approval, his approach is very direct.  He went straight to his father and confronted him about being part of the war, and insisted on joining the militia.   While Jack keeps what he is doing a secret, thinking  that his father will eventually find out on his own that he is working for the secret services  Another difference between these two characters is the relationship between them and their fathers.   Adam and his father do not have a good relationship.   Adams father manages to see negative in everything that Adam does and he scolds him for it.  Jack on the other hand has a good relationship with his father. They have little contact with one another but they get along well unlike Adam and his father.  These are some of the things that set these two characters apart.
These two characters share many similarities and differences. Both are not under complete control of themselves but they attempt to gain this control in very different way.  They are both alike and different in several ways.

Loss

Authors note: This piece is about the climax and the cause and effects of the climax of the historical fiction novel April Morning
How would it be if you lost something that changed your life forever? This is exactly what happened to Adam Cooper from the novel April Morning by Howard fast. The novel is a historical fiction novel based on the battle of Lexington. In the story thousands of redcoats planned on marching from Boston to Lexington. A battle then took place. The redcoats did not win the battle and were driven back to Boston. At the very beginning of the battle Adam’s father was shot and killed by the redcoats. The loss of Adam’s father (Mosses) was the climax of the story.
The death of Mosses was the climax of the story. Without his father Adam’s Life would never be the same. There is no going back from that point; there was no way to bring back Mosses Cooper. The climax of a story is sometimes called the point of no return, which means there is no going back. Once Mosses is dead there is no going back to a normal life for Adam, which is what makes this the climax.
The cause of the climax was the decision of the colonists to protect what was rightfully theirs. Meaning they were not going to let the British walk over them and take what is theirs. This rebellion against the British caused the battle which is when the death of Mosses occurred.
The climax has a major effect on Adam’s everyday life. Things will never be the same for him without his father. He will have to try to do everything his father once did on his own with no help. Adam’s life will never be the same due to the death of Mosses.

Change of Perspective

Authors note: This is an assigned piece that is supposed to explain how the perspective of a narrator can change the way the reader looks at the events.
In April Morning, there is a fifteen year old boy named Adam who struggles to get along with his father. The story is written in Adam’s point of view.  From this perspective, a lot of events and characters are described in a way that creates a negative feeling towards his father in the reader about the way his father treats him
One way that Adam’s point of view influences the reader's interpretation is that it makes it sound like his father does nothing but scold him. It makes the reader think that his father always yells at him because he hates him.
However, the reader would feel a lot differently about the relationship between Adam and his father (Mosses) if the novel was written in the point of view of Mosses. Later in the novel Adam told his mother about how he gets the impression that Mosses hates him. Shortly after that Adam overheard a conversation between his parents. “Well he seems to have gotten the you hate him.’ ‘Hate him!’ my father exploded. ‘Of all the crazy notions! Of all the idiotic ideas! There a boy, my first born son- why, how could any man love a son any more than I love that boy?’”(p.45) This shows that his father does not hate Adam and that the story would’ve obviously sounded different from his father’s point of view.
As you can see, the point of view of a story forces the reader to see just one side of an event or topic. In April Morning, the narrator's perspective makes the reader see Adam’s father as mean and cruel when that is actually not the case. The point of view will always change from narrator to narrator due to bias.

Unchanged

(authors note: This piece is analyzing if Ponyboy Curtis from the Outsiders is a static character or a dynamic character. I could not find out how to double space, that is why it is not double spaced.)

Ponyboy Curtis from “The Outsiders” is a static character. A static character is a character that doesn’t change from the beginning of a book to the end.

In the beginning of the story Ponyboy didn’t exactly have the same mind set as the rest of the greasers. Greasers were known to be cold, mean, and careless. Ponyboy was the exact opposite of that. He didn’t like to participate in stealing or fights with the other greasers. That didn’t change the fact that the greasers were his family.. Towards the end of the book Johnny told Ponyboy to stay gold, which meant to remain the same and to not change. Ponyboy did not change from the beginning of the book to the end.

Some may mistake Ponyboy for a dynamic character. Their reasoning would most likely be that he saved those kids from the burning house and was considered a hero. This was only a change in the way he and the greasers were looked at. It wasn’t a change in Ponyboy because he was always this way.

He started the book as a non stereotypical greaser and ended the book as a non stereotypical greaser which makes him a static character.

Stereotyping

"I barely heard him. I came closer and leaned over to hear what he was going to say. 'Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold …' The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died." These were the last words past between Johnny and Ponyboy before the demise of Johnny. I think that Johnny's final words relate to the theme of stereotyping.
Stereotyping is displayed throughout this whole book. The world just assumes that greasers are cold mean hoods and that is all there is too them. The world also views the socs as nothing more than snobby rich kids. Not every character in this story follows these stereotypes. I think that the quote relates to not everyone being a stereotypic greaser or a stereotypical soc. Johnny is telling Ponyboy to stay golden which I think means to stay the way he is which is being a non stereotypical greaser. Johnny defies all of the stereotypes given to greasers. He is not mean but in fact nice and caring. He doesn’t like participating in the events that the gang does but occasionally does it anyways because everyone else does. Johnny completely defies the stereotypes given to greasers.

Successful

Authors note: This piece is about what i predict would happen in the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton if the book continued on.

I predict that Ponyboy Curtis from The Outsiders by S.E Hinton will go on to being successful in life. It is mentioned throughout the book that Ponyboy attends school and is very bright. I  think that he will continue to be successful in school and eventually move on to college. He will then live a normal life like most people.

Pride

From my position as a middle schooler I don’t think too much about my country. I personally am more focused on smaller things like sports and doing well in school. When thinking about it I am proud of my country. The U.S is a very powerful country. It has a democracy, which gives citizens many rights. The U.S is also a very powerful country, and it is always one of the first to help others when they are in need. I do take pride in my country.

Creatoin vs. Evolution

Authors note: For this assignment we were required to write a persuasive argument piece of our choice. My choice was evolution vs. creation.

How do you think everything was created? Some think that it was something called the big bang, others believe that everything was created by god. I personally believe that god is in fact the creator.
The big bang theory states that the universe started at a point and has been expanding ever since. When most people think of the big bang theory they think of an explosion of some sort, which is false. People say that is an expansion that is still happening now. I think that this is not true. Without god how could there have even been a start?
How could the big bang have possibly created life? Earth is full of life. Plants, people, and animals cover the earth. I don’t see how an expansion could possibly be capable of creating life; I also think that it is impossible for nonliving materials to create living things. I think that this shows that god is the creator.
One example from the bible that I think helps prove that god does exist is the great flood. God wasn’t happy with his creation of man so he sent a great flood to cleanse the earth. There is one man that god wasn’t disappointed by and his name was Noah. God instructed Noah to build an ark to save him and all of the animals. God told Noah that he would send two of each animal to the ark. Two of every animal arrived and boarded the ark. God created the flood. There is evidence of the flood all over. The flood would’ve caused any plants or animals that aren’t capable of living in the water to die. Many of the dead animals would become fossils. Thousands of fossils have been recovered. If you are flying in a plane and you look out the window the land would most likely like almost like it’s wrinkled. The flood lasted about a year and drained off quickly which is probably what caused the land to look like it does now. There is evidence that god does exist and that the stories in the bible are true.
God is the creator. He is how it all began. I strongly believe that he is real. To me the big bang makes no sense. It is all made up. God is what started everything.

Scorpia Rising Plot

Authors Note: We were required to write an assignment demonstrating our knowledge of plot structure. I wrote about the plot structure in the book “Scorpia Rising” by Anthony Horowitz.

A well constructed plot involves five steps, exposition, rising actions, climax, falling actions, and resolution.

The first part of a plot is the Exposition, also known as the introduction. The introduction establishes who the main characters are, the setting, the point of view, and the main conflicts. The exposition in “Scorpia Rising” establishes the main conflict that the rest of the story is based on. In the beginning of the story there is a man working for a national criminal organization called Scorpia. He goes to a museum to meet a client. On the way out of the meeting the man is ambushed by British intelligence agency MI6. The man manages to escape. He meets with other members of Scorpia and they developed a plan. Their plan involved getting MI6 to send the main character, Alex rider on a mission. While he was on that mission they were going to capture him and torture him then kill him. MI6 fell into the trap and sent Alex on the mission. This is the introduction. It shows who the main character is (Alex), the point of view is also displayed, both narrative and from Alex’s point of view, and the setting is established. This part of the story is in fact the introduction.

After the introduction comes Rising Actions. Rising Actions are events that take place leading up to the climax. There were many Rising Actions in this story. In my opinion one rising action lead up to the climax more than the others. Alex followed the man that he was spying on to an unknown destination. Alex was almost killed by a bomb when he reached the destination. When he got back to his apartment
Jack(Alex’s house keeper/guardian) was gone. There was a note telling him to go to a cemetery about an hour away from his apartment if he wants to see Jack again. The note was signed “Scorpia”, they had kidnapped jack. Alex did as he was told and was at the destination at the set time. This is an example of a rising action from the story

The Rising Actions are followed by the Climax. The Climax of a story is known as the “point of no return”, which means that there is no going back. The Climax in this story is when Alex goes to the destination Scorpia requested. Now that he is in their hands there is no going back. He can’t just decide to leave whenever he wants, and if he didn’t come they would ill Jack which would have made things never the same for Alex again. There is no going back from where he is now which means that that is the “point of no return”. This part of the story is the climax.

The next part of plot structure is falling actions. Falling actions are events that lead from the climax to the resolution. The main falling action in this story was when Alex managed to escape from where he was being held by Scorpia. After escaping Alex stopped Scorpia from assassinating the secretary of state. This is a falling action because they lead from the climax to the resolution.

The resolution comes last on a plotline. The resolution is when the main conflict is finally solved. The resolution in this story is that Scorpia’s plans had failed and Alex is able to go back home alive. The main conflict is solved at this point which means that this is the resolution.

The elements of plot structure were easily identifiable in this book.

I Am Number Four essay

" I turn my head. Through the dizziness and blurry vision I see a scout fifteen feet away from me. Long trench coat, hat pulled to its eyes. It drops the coat and takes off the hat to reveal a pail and hairless head. It reaches to the back of its belt and removes a bowie knife, the blade which is no less than twelve inches long. I close m eyes. I don’t care anymore. The scout's raspy breathing comes my way, ten feet, then five. And then the footsteps end. The scout grunts in pain, and begins gurgling. I open my eyes., the scout so close that I can smell it. The bowie knife drops from its hand, and there in its chest, where I assume its heart must be, is the end of a butchers knife. The knife is pulled free. The scout drops to its knees, falls to the side, and then explodes into a pile of ashes." That was one of the many action filled scenes in the book " I Am Number Four" by Pittacus Lore. I enjoyed reading this book for many reasons.

One of the many things I liked about this book was the Topic. At first I thought that I wouldn’t like it because it involved aliens and other make believe things. Once I was about half way through the book I started to enjoy it. It was both uncommon and interesting. I enjoyed the topic of this book very much.

Along with topic was great word choice. Lore used a wide variety of word choice to help you get a better picture of what was going on. There was a detailed description of every thing. I had a good picture of every scene in the book. Lore used good vocabulary to make the book more interesting.

Good vocabulary was one of the many reasons why I liked this book. The topic was both unique and interesting. I enjoyed reading this book for many reasons.

Croatian Eagles

Croatian Eagles
The Croatian Eagles are a soccer team that I play against. When I played them in the fall we won. That was probably my favorite game of the season. The final score was 1-0. There were three red cards, six yellow cards, and three sendoff's. When a referee gives a player a red card it means that they had done something bad. They would not be able to play for the rest of the game. A yellow card is like a warning. If a player gets two yellow cards it’s a red card. Sendoff's are when a referee has to ask someone to leave the field or stadium. This is usually given to fans or coaches. In most games there aren't any cards or sendoff's. When we played the Croatian's there were many. We had one yellow card, everything else was on them. That was my favorite game of the season.

Playoffs

NBA Playoffs
The NBA playoffs have been going on for a while now. The team that I want to win is down 3-1. In the playoffs they play best out of seven which means that two teams play each other until one of the two teams gets four wins. Right now it’s the semifinals. I want the bulls to make it to the finals but I don’t think that they will. I think that the heat will end up winning it all but I want the bulls to.

Stranded

Step by step Tom was making his long journey out of the scorching hot desert. Each step seemed to get harder, the never ending ocean of sand dragging him down. He had nothing to drink aside from half a bottle of water that was in his backpack. He was so tempted to just drink it all now but he knew that he needed to make it last as long as possible. In the distance tom saw water. But he was unable to reach it no matter how far he traveled, it was all an illusion.

Tom stumbled then collapsed. He was exhausted and dehydrated and there was nothing he could do about it. He forced himself to sit up and look around. High in the sky was a helicopter. In an instant tom was on his feet jumping, waving, yelling and doing everything he could to be seen. To be rescued. The helicopter kept on going, Tom watched it until it disappeared from sight. Tom dropped to his knees, and then fell face first in the sand. He fell asleep within the next five minutes.

He woke up hours later freezing. It was pitch black. It must have been sometime in the middle of the night. He even started to feel pain in his hands and feet. Everything was starting to get numb. It was easily below freezing and all tom was wearing was shorts and a short sleeve t-shirt. He was beginning to experience frost bite. Once again tom fell asleep, this time only half conscious.

When Tom woke up again he was sweating. He struggled to his feet. Then started walking. He walked for hours. Hoping to find something. He stopped looked to the left than the right, scanning his surroundings. To his left, nothing. Tom thought that he saw some vegetation a few miles in front of him which would mean food and water. Then tom looked to the right. About a mile away he could see the wreckage of some type of vehicle. That raised his spirits and gave him a reason to keep going.

Once tom got closer he realized that it was a downed helicopter. The cockpit was lying at least twenty yards away from the tail. It had obviously snapped off during the crash landing. All tom could see of the cockpit was a tangle of wires. It was half buried in the sand. Tom went and looked at the cockpit first. He was unable to see inside. He tried the door but it was jammed. He had an idea. Tom had to find something that he could break the window with. He walked around the cockpit, looking for something for him to use to break the window with. He found a small piece of metal that had been torn off the helicopter during the crash. He went back around to the window. With all he had he slammed the piece of metal into the window.

Nothing but a crack. He tried again, but had the same result. Three times after that the window shattered. He dropped the piece of metal, and then moved some wires out of his way so he could see inside. Once he got a good glance he wished he hadn't discovered the helicopter. Inside sitting in the chair was the dead body of what had once been the pilot. It was half covered in sand and had a large number of insects crawling on it. The insects had obviously been feasting on the body for at least a day. Tom was disgusted but he forced himself to look around inside the cockpit for anything that may help him. He found a first aid kit, an empty water bottle, and a pocket knife. He kept all of it assuming that it could help him in the future.

Tom abandoned the helicopter and kept walking. He was no longer headed in any specific direction. The sun beating down on him, it was easily over ninety degrees. All of the sudden he felt a searing pain on his right ankle. He collapsed. Coiled up in front of him was a rattle snake. He had been bitten. Tom was starting to get dizzy. He was losing his vision. The world was spinning. All of the sudden everything went black. It was over.

Spring Break

Spring break
This year for spring break I am either going to South Carolina or Washington D.C. I personally would rather go to south Carolina. We have went there for the past few years and I really like it there. But so far it looks more like we will end up going to Washington DC. I think I would like going to Washington DC. If I got to chose between the two I would chose to go to South Carolina.

To Build a Fire essay

If you were stranded in the cold would you chose to do what you have been taught to do or would you rely on your instincts? In the short story To Build A Fire by Jack London there is a man walking through the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. Instead of trusting his instincts he does what he has learned which in the end of the story causes him to lose his life. The lesson in this story is that sometimes it is better to trust your instincts than things that you have been taught. This story is a tragedy for numerous reasons.

The plot line of this story matches the plot line of a tragedy. It starts with the world in chaos for the main character. In this story it is about 75 below 0 and the main character is several miles away from civilization. Next there is a rise to power. The main character starts making good ground and believes that he will make it to his destination sooner than he expected. After that comes a tragic flaw. Well walking the main character steps through the ice into knee deep water. Then the tragic flaw leads to a tragic fall. The main character failed to make a fire to keep himself warm. Last there is death or death symbolism. Due to the main characters mistake of stepping in water he freezes to death. This story's plot line is identical to the plot line of a tragedy.

Along with plot line this story has characteristics similar to those of a tragedy. In order to be a tragedy a book has to be realistic. This story is very realistic. sadly there are people that do get lost and freeze to death. The other characteristic that all tragedies have is that the main character is in control. The main character didn’t have to go out in the cold. He didn’t have to keep traveling, he could have stopped and built a fire hoping that someone would find him. Stepping in the water was also under control of the main character, he didn’t have to go that way and take that risk but he did and it cost him his life. The main character was clearly in control throughout the whole story.

Not only does this story have the characteristics it needs it also has the same purpose as a tragedy. The purpose of a tragedy is to learn a moral lesson. The lesson in this story was that sometimes it is better to trust your instincts than things that you have been taught. The main character decided to obey what he has been taught and the result was death. The dog that was with him thought he was foolish, and knew that they shouldn’t have kept going. In the end the dog lived and the main character didn’t. We could never have enough knowledge to replace our innate behaviors.

The lesson in this story is one that could possibly save your life one day. To Build a Fire is a tragedy for many reasons. This story contains everything it needs to be a tragedy. It showed that you should sometimes trust your instincts which is the lesson learned. The characteristics of this story matched the characteristics of a tragedy. This story's plot line was also the same as a tragedy plot line. This story is a tragedy for numerous reasons.

Memory

Ill never forget the time I almost drowned at the dells. It was very scary and at that time I had no idea how to react to the situation. It is not a good memory but it is one I will probably never forget.

My friend Taylor and I had never been to the dells and didn’t know what to expect. When we go t there we were stunned. We were staying for only two days. On the first day we had a great time. The second was good until we went on the lazy river. Neither of us knew how to swim and we were both unable to stand with our heads above water. Un aware of what was going to happen we set out. We grabbed a double tube. The first lap around was kind of boring so we started to tip the tube a little bit tot entertain ourselves. The tube flipped. I tried to take a breathe but I found myself with a mouthful of water. I panicked. We were trying to use each other to get above water. At that time I was smaller than my friend so I was unable to reach the surface. We even drifted right past a life guard. Then my mom came. She got each of us out of the water. I was still panicked though. After that I didn’t want to go anywhere near the water.

That is one memory that I will never forget. It didn’t effect me very much, I was never afraid of the water even after that happened. It is not a good memory but it is one I will never forget.

Class story

" Faster, faster, faster." " Its closing in, quick." John dove out into the open air just in time. He turned back just in time to see his partner crushed between the two walls. He was on his own. Fred struggled to his feet than ran trying to spare his own life. Moments later he was picked up off the ground. He felt as though he was being carried by a giant bird. The world was spinning, suddenly everything went black. John assumed he was dead and in a way he wished he was dead, he had nothing more to lose. He woke up feeling week and drowsy. He sat up and tried take in his surroundings. He didn’t recognize anything. It was scorching, he looked around to see lava leaping up the sides of the decrepit looking walls. He turned around and now once again wished he was dead. In front of him was something worse than he could ever imagine. It was as if a nightmare had came to life. It had the same build as a dragon it but was much, much worse. There was nothing but bones with a small layer of transparent skin. It was horrifying. He wanted all this to end. He tried to find a way out but there was none. He jumped, just trying to put himself out of his misery. The creature got to him before he fell to his death. He was crushed instantly by the jaws of the animal. That was the end of Fred nobody knew he was gone and if they did they wouldn’t be able to find him.

Daylight savings

Daylight savings is when you change your clock either an hour earlier or an hour before. In the fall it gives you an extra hour of sleep but in the spring it takes away an hour of sleep. This last weekend it has taken away an hour of sleep. I've felt tired all week and Have never been willing to get out of bed. Over all I dislike daylight savings. I think that we should just never change our clocks like most other countries do. Daylight savings isnt needed.

The lottery literary analysis

How would you react if you won the lottery? In the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson winning the lottery means losing your life. Every one in the village has to pick a slip of paper out of the box. There is one slip that has a black dot on it. Then the family of the person who picked the black dot slip takes another slip. Whoever gets it on the second draw gets stones hurled at he or she until they are no longer living. This book has an irony mode of literature for many reasons.

The prize of winning the lottery is death, that is ironic. When most people think of a lottery they think of the winner getting a large some of money or something else that would have a positive impact on their life. It is ironic how in the short story winning the lottery is what you would least want to happen to you. The fact that the story itself is ironic is one of the main reasons that this story is an irony.

Along with being ironic this short story also has the characteristics needed to be classified as an irony mode of literature. Irony's are very unrealistic. Losing your life as a prize for winning the lottery fortunately isn't realistic. Another characteristic is that the main character can do no right. The main character knew her husband had picked the slip with the black dot, she demanded a redraw and she herself ended up getting the slip with the black dot. Another characteristic is that the main character is stupid and weak. She demanded a redraw which in a way was stupid and she didn’t even bother trying to defend herself as her whole village including her family hurled stones at her. This short story's characteristics also match those of an irony.

Another thing that makes this story an irony besides the characteristics is the plotline. An irony plotline starts with the world in chaos. For the village in the short story having the lottery means chaos. Next comes a major conflict. The major conflict is that the main character sees that her husband has the slip with the black dot which means that there is still a chance she will win. Last there is death or loss of sanity for the main character. The whole village including her own family threw stones at her until she died. This story's plotline matches the plotline of an irony.

As you can see The Lottery by Shirley Jackson definitely has an irony mode of literature. When you think of winning a lottery you would probably never think of the prize being death. This story contains everything it needs to have an irony mode of literature.

Short Story Literary Annaylisis

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to travel to the past? In the short story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury. A small group of people go on a hunting trip. This hunting trip isn't like most others though. They travel back in time and hunt dinosaurs. They need to be very careful because almost anything they do in the past can affect the future. In the end one man bails out at the sight of the dinosoar and goes back to the time machine. On the way back he felt like he lost control over himself he wondered off the path. He stepped on a butterfly. When he finally got back to the present thing weren't how they were when he left. He lifted his rifle and shot him for not following to instructions. My favorite thing about this story is how the author didn’t tell you exactly what happened but he gave you enough clues to figure it out. This book has an irony mode of literature for a number of different reasons.

One of the main reasons this book is an irony is the plotline. An irony begins with the world in chaos. In the story they are time traveling which is almost guaranteed to soon be illegal. Next comes a major conflict. One man wondered off the path and which could affect the future on a massive scale. Last there is death or loss of sanity for the main character. When they come back from the future they see a sign. It was spelled much differently than it had been when they left for the past. The guide lifted his rifle and shot the man who had wondered off the path. The plotline goes exactly how it needs to to be classified as an irony.

Along with the plotline this story also has the characteristics it needs to fit into the irony category. One of the main characteristics of an irony is non-realistic. In this story they travel back in time to hunt dinosaurs which is currently impossible. In an irony the main character is not in control. In the story it specifically said that he felt like he couldn’t control his movements anymore. Ironies are supposed to expose people’s fears. The man saw the dinosaur and completely lost his composure. He didn’t want to be there any more, he was afraid. The characteristics matched those of an irony.

There are many reasons that this book is an irony. It doesn’t relate to any of the other modes of literature. Comedy and tragedy have to be realistic, romance is happy and nothing can go wrong. I enjoyed reading this story because it got me wondering what it would be like to actually go back to the past. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see how the world once looked? This story has an irony mode of literature for a number of different reasons.

Nightrise Essay

Nightrise Essay

“Then there was the screech of tires and a second car pulled out of nowhere, veering across the path of oncoming traffic. Jamie heard the blast of horns. The neon lights were blurring and the whole night seemed to be folding in on itself. He thought that the car was going to run him over and he wondered what would be the point of that. Drug him and then kill him? It wouldn’t make any sense. The car shuddered to a halt. One of its tires had mounted the sidewalk. The car was between him and the two men – just as the German Sheppard had been earlier. A door swung open and a voice called out to him. “Get in!”” (p40) That is a very small part of one of the many action packed scenes in the book “Nightrise” by Anthony Horowitz. This book is my favorite in the whole series because it is full of action and always keeps you thinking about what is going to happen next.

My favorite thing about this book is that you never know what is going to happen next. At one point the main character Jamie was shot well escaping from prison. He woke up in the past where there had been a terrible war. Luckily he was on the victorious side of the war, he and five other teenagers won by a trick. The next morning he was back in the mountains a short distance from the prison he had escaped. Another example is that in Jamie’s dreams he saw a man who kept telling him that he is going to kill him, not referring to Jamie. Later in the book Jamie stopped his brother from killing a candidate for a presidential election. I assumed that the “he” was the group of people had kidnapped Scott, Jamie’s brother. I also thought that Scott was the one that was going to get killed. Later in the book Jamie stopped Scott from assassinating a presidential election candidate. The people that had kidnapped Scott had tried to turn him against Jamie. The author always writes the last thing that you would expect to happen. That is always a good characteristic for a book to have. It keeps you reading trying to find out what is going to happen.

Along with the many surprising events was great vocabulary. When a book has good vocabulary it lets you visualize a scene better. It helps you better understand where the main character is and what is happening. “Two of the rotors were missing and the other two were buckled and broken. The tail had snapped in half and the cockpit was a mess of shattered glass and dangling wires.” (p162) That is how the author described the crashed helicopter they encountered in the desert. The author could have just said that there was a crashed helicopter which wouldn’t give you a good picture of the scene. Instead he used a variety of vocabulary words to let you in a way visualize the scene. I enjoy reading when the author does that good of a job describing a scene.

As you can see there are many things that make this an interesting book to read. This book is my favorite in the whole series because it is full of action and always keeps you thinking about what is going to happen next. I would recommend this book to almost any body.

Superbowl

XLV

This is one of the first superbowls the packers have made for about a decade. To me it looks like they have a good chance of winning. They have been doing good all seaso and are able to beat any team in the NFL if they lay their best. My two favorite players on the packers are BJ Raji and Clay Matthews. I would be very disapointed if they packers lost the superbowl. They are capable of beating anybody and they will beat the Steelers.
