Literary Anaylisis

Mary Poppins Literary Analysis
By Bennett Eldredge

All of the sudden the wind started blowing and it got dark. All the nannies waiting for the interview were lifted off their feet and blown away, seconds later Mary Poppins came flying in on an umbrella just in time for the interview. That is a scene from the well known movie Mary Poppins by P.L Travers. This movie is considered a romance through both its plotline and its symbolism, I didn’t think that it was romance the first time I saw it.
One main reason this movie is considered a romance is the plotline. A romance plotline starts off with a minor conflict, then the problem is resolved and there is life symbolism. In Mary Poppins the minor conflict is that Mr. Banks doesn’t have time to spend with his kids. The resolution is that Mary Poppins comes and eventually Mr. Banks sees that he needs to spend more time with his kids. This resolved the problem and showed life symbolism which is exactly what is on a romance plotline.
Not only did it follow the plotline it also followed the romance chart of symbolism. There are things like flowers, parks, drawings, singning, and much more. These all are things that can be found on the romance chart of symbolism. There are even animals that follow it like ducks, pigs, and even penguins. Almost everything in Mary Poppins followed the romance chart of symbolism.
To be a romance it needs to follow more than just the plotline and the chart of symbolism, it also has to have the characteristics a romance has. The most obvious characteristic is fantasy vision. In Mary Poppins people are flying and going to other worlds through paintings. Another characteristic is that the main character is in control. Mary Poppins is always in control in what they are doing. The movie Mary Poppins has the characteristics it needs to be a romance.
This is one of many movies that doesn’t seem like a romance but is. Most people think that since it isn’t romantic it isn’t a romance. That is not true, romances don’t have to be romantic the same thing applies with a comedy. The plotline, characteristics, and chart of symbolism show that this movie is a romance.
